Edwin M. Rutkowski, 85, of Niagara Falls, NY, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 14, 1922 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Thomas and Josephine (Kaczor) Rutkowski and attended local schools.
He worked at the Mohekan Market and International Paper Mill Co., before entering the U.S. Army, January 5, 1943. He served with Co. B 184th Infantry in the Aleutian Islands, Philippine Islands, Ryukyus, Western Pacific and received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with four bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, four overseas service bars, one bronze Service Arrowhead, and was honorably discharged November 24, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Returning from the service he went to work for the Niagara Falls Board of Education in maintenance, retiring after 40 years. Edwin enjoyed bowling, camping, astronomy and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by daughters, Gail Jansen, Teresa L. Yale-Carson (Timothy Carson),Lori Rutkowski, all of Niagara Falls, NY, and sons, Larry Rutkowski of Lantana, FL,Tommy Rutkowski of Sugarhill, GA; grandchildren, Edward Yale, Alexa Carson, Timothy Carson, Elizabeth Rutkowski and several nieces, nephews; sister, Annie Naradowski of Niagara Falls, NY and former wife, Amy Pontiere of Phoenix, AZ. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Joseph Rutkowski, Matthew W. Rutkowski and sisters, Mary Rutkowski and Alice Rutkowski.
Friends may call Friday, October 3rd from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Zajac Funeral Home, Inc., 319- 24th St., cor. Welch Ave., Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday, October 4th and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM from St. John deLaSalle Church, 8477 Buffalo Ave., with Rev. Slawomir Siok officiating. Burial with Military Honors in Holy Trinity Cemetery Lewiston, NY.
